The Boutari Winery

The Boutari company was the first to open its winery to the public, in 1988. The goal was to draw attention to a unique wine-producing region of Greece. The winery has the capacity to produce 1,100,000 litres each year and has 190 oak barrels in which the wine is left to mature.
The Boutari winery in Santorini plays an important role in the viticultural, socio-economic and cultural development of the region. The company’s expertise, in combination with the experience, hard work and enthusiasm of the local vine-growers, has yielded unparalleled results, promoting the old, established varieties of grape and experimenting successfully with the planting of new foreign and Greek varieties. The Boutari winery in Santorini produces the following wines: Selladia, Asyrtiko Boutari, Santorini Boutari, Kallisti and Vinsanto.

Domaine Sigalas winery

Domaine Sigalas was founded in 1991 by Paris Sigalas, Christos Markozane and Yiannis Toundas. Initially, Sigalas made his wine at the converted Sigalas family home. In 1998 a new vinification, bottling and aging unit was built in a privately owned area of Oia, on the northern part of Santorini. Today, after constant investments in technology and modernization the current production allows for the elaboration and bottling of 350,000 bottles per year. In addition Sigalas has been a pioneer in the organic viticulture . Since 1994 Domaine Sigalas has participated in the organic farming methods program and cooperates with DIO (certification organism for organic products).

The company continues to develop its strategy based on its founding principles - a creative relationship with the tradition, the Santorini Vineyards as well as the use of the best in winemaking technology, experience and quality products. These principles have always been and still are the fundamental basis of its philosophy.

Estate Argyros winery

Estate Argyros has been producing wine on the island since 1903, and is now run by the third generation of the Argiros family, Matheos Argyros along with his father, Yiannis. When Yiannis took over the winery in 1974 it was primarily a bulk operation, selling wine to whomever would buy the cheap grapes. The early Seventies were a hard time for winery owners on the island, many of whom were seeing that their land was worth more to real estate developers than as productive vineyards, given the burgeoning tourism industry. Rather than selling, however, Yiannis took the opportunity to purchase the best vineyard parcels on the island, and quietly assembled what is now the 55 acre family estate. During this time he also made radical changes to the wine production regimen, reducing yields, modernizing the winemaking technology, and focusing on quality rather than quantity.

The winery now produces some of the best wine on the tiny island, and is known especially for its Vin Santo, which is aged for 14 years (the current release is 1984), and is topped up, solera-style with a little wine from new vintages every year. According to some, this is Greece's most sought-after dessert wine.
